Ferritin Stuck? 7 Reasons to Question Your Iron Pill (Reason 2 Is Printed on the Bottle)

Hint: it’s the big number. Reason 1: what people report on less than a third of it. Reason 5 may change what “normal” means.

A woman holding a thin raspberry-colored strip just below her lips, about to place it on her tongue

Maybe you took your iron every day and your number just sat there. Maybe the pill was the problem, and your stomach quit before your ferritin moved.

Either way, somebody handed you a 65 mg tablet. (Your bottle may say 325 mg of ferrous sulfate. It’s the same tablet.) Nobody told you where the 65 comes from. That’s Reason 2.

First, what you came for: the ferritin numbers people report on a 19 mg iron strip. It’s the one in the clip above, and yes, we sell it.

Reason 1: THE NUMBERS 25 to 45 at the 30-day mark. 22 to 58 in about 13 weeks. That’s what people report on a 19 mg strip.

That’s less than a third of the 65 on your bottle. Here are two public comments, word for word, and the number from our ads.

This one moved at the 30-day mark:

“I tested late June and my ferritin was at 25. Started the melts a week or two later (no other iron supplements in between) and at the 30 day mark tested again and my ferritin was 45.”

Her ferritin on two blood tests, about 13 weeks apart, as she reported it to Alvra.

This one started at 6 and hoped for more:

“I just got my lab results and they weren't as good as I was hoping. I was at Ferritin of 6 in June and now (11 weeks later) am at 14.”

Reddit, r/Anemic, September 2026 (part of a longer comment)

Those were all on 19 mg. Here’s where the 65 on your bottle comes from.

Reason 2: The 65 on your bottle is over the NIH’s daily upper limit for healthy adults. As far as we can find, it traces back to an old pharmacy weight.

An unbranded white iron tablet bottle labelled Iron 65 mg (325 mg Ferrous Sulfate)
65 mgthe iron
325 mgthe whole compound

The big 65 is the iron in one tablet. The small print, 325 mg, is the weight of the whole compound, ferrous sulfate. Only a fifth of that is iron.

The NIH puts the upper limit for healthy adults at 45 mg a day. One 65 mg tablet is over it. The NIH says doses that high may cause nausea and constipation. It also says doctors sometimes prescribe more for anemia.

Why 65? One standard label still prints the tablet as “325 mg (5 gr).” That’s five grains, an old pharmacy weight. We couldn’t find a guideline that explains the 65.

Now, about that nausea and constipation.

Reason 3: the standard drugstore iron pill is ferrous sulfate, and it’s rough on stomachs. . There’s no ferrous sulfate in this strip

2.3×
the odds of stomach side effects on ferrous sulfate compared with placebo, across 20 randomized trials with 3,168 adults.

In 20 trials with 3,168 adults, ferrous sulfate carried about 2.3 times the odds of stomach and gut side effects, next to a pill with nothing in it.

About 7 in 10 of the buyers we asked had tried iron pills before this.

If you stop taking your iron, it can’t raise your number. So we sell one that’s built to be easy to take.

Reason 4: in a two-year randomized trial of frequent blood donors, 19 mg a day and 38 mg a day did essentially the same thing.

+229 mg*
38 mg tablet
+229 mg*
No iron or placebo
−52 mg
65 mg tablet
not in the study

*Both iron doses combined, after the first 60 days of supplementation. The trial found the 19 mg and 38 mg effects statistically indistinguishable (P = 0.54). The no-iron figure is the estimated change per year of repeat donation, so it is not on the same time scale. The iron was ferrous gluconate.

The trial is called STRIDE. Most of the donors started with ferritin under 26: three in four of the women and about half of the men.

After each blood donation, donors took one tablet a day for 60 days: 19 mg, 38 mg, or no iron. Nobody knew which they had. Two years in, the researchers couldn’t tell the 19 mg group from the 38 mg group on estimated body iron.

If 65 mg didn’t move your number, will 19? You’ve got three things to go on. The reports in Reason 1. This trial, where 19 mg kept pace with double the dose. And 60 days to check it on your own blood work. Nobody can promise you a number. So if it isn’t right for you, you get your money back.

What this trial can’t tell you: it used tablets of a different iron, not a strip, and nobody took 65 mg.

The people in it were blood donors, about half of them men. And 30 to 40% of donors on iron still had ferritin under 26 at the end. The authors say it can’t be applied directly to iron deficiency anemia.

The standard treatment for iron deficiency has been 100 to 200 mg of iron a day, split into two or three doses. More iron per day can raise hemoglobin faster, and smaller doses can take longer to refill your iron stores.

Reason 5: for women, a lab report can print “normal” from 15. The 2026 hematology guideline calls 30 or lower iron deficiency.

FERRITIN (ng/mL) “Normal” for women on a LabCorp report starts at 15 0 10 15 30 60 Single digits: doctor first Iron deficiency: 30 or lower American Society of Hematology, 2026

If your report prints “normal” and your ferritin is 30 or lower, the 2026 hematology guideline calls that iron deficiency.

This strip fits you if pills turned your stomach or you quit them, and you want a daily iron you’ll keep taking.

It also fits you if you took your pills, your number sat still, and you want to run your own 60-day test.

See your doctor first if your ferritin is in single digits, if your doctor wants you on an infusion, or if a doctor found a cause, or nobody has looked for one yet, like blood loss or a gut condition such as celiac disease. If a doctor set your dose, ask your doctor before you switch. Under 18? Skip it.

Reason 6: You don’t have to take our word for it If it isn’t right for you, get your money back inside 60 days.

The 60-day guarantee, in plain terms. If the strips aren’t right for you, for any reason, you get a full refund of the product price. No blood test or lab result needed. You’re covered even if you’ve used every strip.

To claim it, email support@alvra.net with your order number within 60 days of your order date.

How the refund works
If some strips are left, we may ask you to send them back. We review requests within 5 business days. Once yours is confirmed, the refund goes back to your original payment method within 7 to 10 business days. After day 60, we review requests case by case.

Not every number moves. This one started at 7:

Facebook comment on an Alvra ad, July 2026

  • “Interesting the results you and your friend had. My ferritin was at 7 at the end of 2025 and after 2 ish months of taking this, my current blood work showed zero change. 🤔😩”

If that’s you, you get your money back.

60 days can be long enough for a first look. That 25 to 45 in Reason 1 was at the 30-day mark. A final number takes longer, and refilling iron stores can take months. The 22 to 58 in our ads came from two tests about 13 weeks apart, as she reported it.

Test before your first strip if you can. Test again around day 30. If you bought three tins, you can wait until week six. That’s about day 50 from your order, so you still have time to decide. The blood tests are optional, and you pay for them.

Make your call before day 60. If your number moved and your stomach’s fine, keep going. If not, or if you just want out, email us and get your money back.

Reason 7: It costs $1.33 a day to find out if your ferritin moves

Yes, it costs more than drugstore iron. You’re paying for an iron that’s built to be easy to take. Inside 60 days you can see how your stomach handles it and whether your ferritin starts to move. Your money’s safe the whole time, even if you’ve used every strip.

I have an MTHFR variant. Is the folic acid okay?

It’s folic acid: 240 mcg, which the label counts as 400 mcg DFE of folate. It isn’t methylfolate. The CDC says people with an MTHFR variant can process all types of folate, including folic acid.

 Read the CDC guidance.

What does it taste like?

It is raspberry flavored and sweetened with monk fruit extract and steviol glycosides. If you do not like raspberry, you will not like this one.

How do I take it?

Place one strip on your tongue once a day and let it dissolve. It measured 48 seconds in testing. One strip a day is the label directions. Do not take more.

Pregnant, nursing, on medication or under 18?

Talk to your doctor before using any supplement, this one included. Alvra Fuse is for adults.

Let your own ferritin make the call, and decide before day 60.

Get a baseline ferritin if you can. Take one strip a day as directed. Ask your clinician when to retest, and decide before day 60 whether this is for you.
